2008 Milwaukee LGBT Film Festival

GAMMA Co-Presenting Films

The 21st annual Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival returns this September 4-14 and GAMMA will once again be a part of it. GAMMA will be co-presenting two films, including the award-winning Opening Night Film Were the World Mine, which will play at the Oriental Theatre on Thursday, September 4 at 7:30pm, with a reception to follow at Beans and Barley.

GAMMA will also be co-presenting Save Me, a drama staring Chad Allen, Robert Gant, and Judith Light, which will play Saturday, September 6 at 9pm at the UWM Union Theatre. The entire schedule and all Festival information can be found here: http://arts.uwm.edu/lgbtfilm

Were the World Mine is a about Timothy, a put-upon gay teenager at an all-boys academy, who, when cast in his school’s musical production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream, discovers that he has gained the power to re-orient the world. Timothy, cast as a fairy, inadvertently concocts a magic potion that casts spells of love on whomever it anoints. And soon, the whole world is gay, include the rugby star that Timothy has admired from afar. Mixing the aches of high school longing, some really great musical numbers – with high school athletes transformed into beefcake chorus boys -- and some  John Waters naughtiness, Were the World Mine is a delight, proving that fairies really can rule the world. You can read more about the film and listen to the music here: www.weretheworldmine.com Were the World Mine opens a Festival full of heroic, world-changing youth.

Recalling last year’s For the Bible Tells Me So, the narrative drama Save Me spotlights familiar stars in a stirring story about Christianity and homosexuality. Chad Allen plays Mark, who is checked into Genesis House by an at-wit’s-end brother, exhausted by his reckless, addictive behavior. Run by Gayle (Judith Light) and Ted (Stephen Lang), a married couple of a determined, ideological compassion, Genesis House works to “cure” young men of the “gay affliction” through spiritual guidance and behavior control. Mark is not immune to the camaraderie among his new companions: he overcomes his initial resistance, bonding with his fellow residents—Scott (Robert Gant) his mentor, in particular. As the two grow closer, however, their developing relationship unmoors the stability of Genesis House and threatens the tenets of Gayle and Jim’s teaching. Interested in generating dialogue, Save Me offers no villains: each character, gay man or missionary, irresolute or misguided, stumbles in their hope for some form of solace. It is a very moving and powerful film.

Game Night

Don’t miss game night on September 20th at David S. Game nights are always an easy going enjoyable evening of playing board games, card games and trivia games.

So mark your calendars, bring your beverage and your favorite game, and have a great time! For more information, see the events listing pages.

Aids Walk Wisconsin

"You Have the Power to."

The GAMMA team has stepped off the starting line but really needs your participation to make this event a success. Our Co-Team Captains, Art & Kyle, are registered and have been busily collecting pledges. They now need all of us to join them.

A logical addition to the GAMMA team is our very active Front Runners group. Hopefully this group of loyal runners and walkers will join our GAMMA team and set the pace to our success.

Registering is very easy. Go to: www.aidswalkwis.org , click on Register Today, enter GAMMA in the team name filed and follow the prompts. It takes less than 5 minutes. Once you're registered there are many tools on the website to help you obtain pledges. You can send e-mail requests, track the responses and acknowledge receipt of pledges from folks who support you.  It is incredibly easy and very effective.

While generous pledges are the quantifiable outcome of your participation, there is also the intrinsic reward of knowing that you help make a difference for thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS - some of whom may be your friends or family.

Your participation helps provide:

  • Health care to all - Access to health care can be the difference between life and rapid disease progression and death. Every ARCW client can access high quality health care regardless of their ability to pay.

  • Fight homophobia and discrimination. Your participation supports access to medical, prevention and social services for all people regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity.

  • Prevention - do you know that HIV is growing fastest amongst young gay men? Your support helps provide comprehensive prevention programs to help everyone make wiser choices.

GAMMA members have a great time at our parties, picnics, camping, games nights and other great social events. Now let's come together and make a positive difference in our community for people living with HIV.

For more information, contact Cliff H., Art S., or Kyle P..

On Friday November 14th GAMMA will be having our annual banquet. The festivities for the evening will be held at the Italian Community Center. We will feature dinner and dancing as well as our annual business meeting.

Please be sure to mark your calendars for what will be the primary celebration of Milwaukee GAMMA's 30th anniversary.

Please look for more information in subsequent newsletters.

Milwaukee River Hike V

Come see what nature has to offer, surprisingly, in the midst of Milwaukee's urban setting. The new East Bank Trail has officially opened since our last walk this way. This early autumn, riverside hike may be the last in this series, so you are invited to check it out. Length of hike is flexible. For more information, see the events listing pages or contact E.M.

Dining Out

‘Motor’ at the Harley Davidson Museum
September 26, 2008

Motor offers a menu for lunch and dinner of bold American classics that celebrate the discoveries of the open road. The peach cobbler looks, tastes, and goes down exactly like it does in the roadside diners of Georgia, there are hints of Little Rock in the smoked BBQ ribs and echoes of an endless ride through the countryside in the "One Pounder" pork chop.

Of course, the menu features Wisconsin favorites, like lake-caught Walleye and Milwaukee's best sausage and cheese. While the food is designed for triggering memories, the space is designed for sharing them. Communal tables and a horseshoe-shaped bar make every seat a perfect spot for starting conversations, either with an old friend, or the new friend one seat over.

To view the menu, visit their website:
www.harley-davidson.com .

RSVP due date: September 22, 2008

Welcome to GAMMA!

Since November 1978, GAMMA has provided enjoyable activities.  From the first touch football game along the lakefront, with just a handful of members, to over 130 members today, GAMMA provides fun things to do.

Our major annual events include:  The Valentine’s Brunch, the July Fireworks Picnic, the September Picnic and Corn Roast, the Annual Banquet and Business Meeting, and the Holiday Party.  Our broad membership appreciates these gatherings as a way to visit and socialize with all of our members.

The Outdoors Stuff:  GAMMA offers cross country ski trips, day hikes, numerous camping events, and bike rides.  In some years we have had canoe trips, white water rafting, roller blading, our own Winter Fest and cruises across Lake Michigan.

Volleyball:  We started with occasional summer Sunday afternoon games at Bradford Beach.  We now offer indoor social play at the Beulah Brinton Center during the winter months, and outdoor social play during the summer months.  For the past several years, we have hosted the volleyball activity at PrideFest.

Indoor Events:  We have monthly events such as the Monthly Party, Dining Out, Sheepshead, and Game Night.  We’ve had Bowling and Movie Nights, as well as Barn Dances.

“We Just Want to Have Fun.”  As a club, we’re not into politics or religion.  There’s an important need at the end of a long day or week—kicking back with adult friends, or meeting new ones.

The People:  We have members from all walks of life and in all age groups. There are singles as well as couples and all participate is the various events. GAMMA is blessed with volunteer members who are willing to give of their time and energy to orchestrate all this stuff.  GAMMA has been a success because it continues to attract the kind of people who want to share their fun with others, and who are willing to do what it takes to make things happen.  COME JOIN US!

Please visit our Upcoming Events page and see all that GAMMA has to offer. Most of the events are open to non-members who wish to find out what GAMMA is all about - simply call or use our Contact Page for more information.
